It’s All Conscious Porn…

20100728-HEZEKIAH1

There’s an intro on one of Raekwon’s albums where Papa Wu says that you can’t be good and bad at the same time. I understood his point but I have to disagree. There’s never just one way to be and that’s the beauty of being human. Duality allows us to float between two extremes and that can aid us in finding our place in the world. The more that we give in to our true selves the better we feel. Repressing sucks and I can say that from first hand experience.

In 2010, a talented producer/emcee friend of mine, Hezekiah, called me in to work on a few skits for his then upcoming album titled Conscious Porn. Hez and I are fellow Scorpios and many of the concepts used in the making of the album were ideas that I too shared. Conscious Porn is an ideology where duality is paramount. You can be a stone cold revolutionary while wearing your sexuality on your sleeve. Just because you’re in a respected position doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be able to have fun and live the life that you choose.

Alright, so this may get a bit touchy but follow my mode of thinking for a moment. I’ve encountered many women who some would refer to as earthy (Peace and Blessings!) and conscious that were very adamant about feminism and social activism. Now some would see their passion and aggression and perceive it as intimidating and at one time I did too. I can’t lie there were a few that seemed so hardcore that I did an about face and second guessed approaching them. I got to know a few on an intimate level and I was very surprised by how uninhibited they were behind closed doors. The wildest and most sexual yet you’d never know it by how they carried themselves. The same could be said for women that attend church. They too have a strong sense of sexuality but won’t express it nor give in because some person some where decided that it was “morally corrupt”. SPARE ME!! One of the reasons why I gave up on church besides forcing me to miss the cartoons on Nickelodeon on Sunday mornings was it seemed way too constricting. It just wasn’t for me.

I could never take life so seriously that I’d miss out on being human. Sex is natural. It’s for procreation and believe it or not, for pleasure. To go back for a moment, in reference to the conscious women that I encountered, I can understand why they felt the need to keep that part hidden. Some may try to trivialize and shame them for healthy human desires. Why is sex still taboo? Why are double standards pertaining to how and who have sex with still in place? There needs to be a liberation of thought. A movement that allows humanity to embrace the act positively.

I am familiar with adult entertainers who love what they do as much as they love being involved in social activism. Should their careers in erotica be used against them by silencing their voices? Not at all. If anything, it should give us more of a reason to listen to them and their unique perspectives. You can be two things at once while avoiding an inner war of existentialism. Be who you are and be who you want to be.
